What is Ibero-America

Ibero-America is a community of 22 countries that is born from common roots, history and values. It is a way to participate in a world with a multitude of actors to face challenges that impact people’s daily lives and to reach solutions that transcend the local.

Ibero-America is a community that amplifies its potential, affinities and identity through the Ibero-American General Secretariat.

The Ibero-American General Secretariat undertook this work in 1991. Since then, we have made progress to comply with the mandates that arise from the Summits of Heads of State and Government, and which include key areas for the development of Ibero-America such as culture , knowledge, social inclusion, gender equality, digital transformation, the environment and entrepreneurship.

To make this possible, at the Ibero-American General Secretariat we promote cooperation programs and public policies that address common challenges and that also support each country in its national objectives.

We create spaces for dialogue, learning and agreement between the 22 Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries that make up Ibero-America to strengthen the community both inside and outside our borders. In this way we strengthen the presence of Ibero-America on the international scene, increase the influence of Spanish and Portuguese and raise the potential of the region on both sides of the Atlantic.
